The GATE director Tibor Takács’ rarely seen 1978 glam rock opera METAL MESSIAH is one of those obscure Canadian films still desperately seeking an audience, despite its obvious appeal to both film and music fans. That’s why we’re pleased to be co-presenting a special screening of the film this year at Montreal’s Film Pop festival on Friday September 27. The erotic thriller was a mainstay on video store shelves for much of the late 1980s and early ’90s, but Canadians only rarley got in on the sleazy action. One of our weirdest contributions to the canon is
WHISPER TO A SCREAM (1989), a tale of strippers, delusional musicians and mysterious phone calls that wallows in its clichés without ever really delivering the salacious content promised. It’s also the latest subject of Rick Trembles‘ new exclusive MOTION PICTURE PURGATORY strip, as he takes a peek at the forgotten VHS mainstay where music and murder meet. Rick sez:

“Cindy used to be a hooker! Now she’s carrying a gun and is going to do something about all the people who treated her like dirt!” screamed the poster for EAST END HUSTLE (1976), a French-Canadian hooker revenge film from local sleaze merchants Frank Vitale and Allan Moyle. Rick Trembles‘ latest exclusive MOTION PICTURE PURGATORY takes a peek at the oft-forgotten thriller that still stands as one of the best independently produced Canadian exploitation pics of the grimy 1970s.
